Chinese passenger remanded over wallet theft attempt on flight

BALIK PULAU: A 55-year-old Chinese citizen has been remanded for four days to assist investigations into an alleged attempt to steal a passenger's wallet on a flight from Jakarta, Indonesia to Penang.
Magistrate Chia Huey Ting granted the remand order starting today, allowing police to investigate the case under Section 379 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 511 of the Penal Code for attempted theft.
The suspect arrived at the court compound at 8.40am escorted by police officers.
Police had arrested the suspect following allegations that he attempted to steal a wallet belonging to a fellow passenger during the flight.
Southwest district police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuwal Ab Wahab said police received a report regarding the incident from a 36-year-old Indonesian man yesterday.
He said the incident occurred mid-flight when the victim spotted a man retrieving his bag from the overhead cabin compartment.
No losses were reported as all items belonging to the complainant were recovered.S
