Indonesia pilots used cooking oil-to-aviation fuel initiative

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is promoting the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by utilizing used cooking oil collected through businesses operated by cooperatives under the Red and White Village Cooperatives (KDMP) program.

In cooperation with state-owned energy company Pertamina, the Cooperatives Ministry on Thursday (October 29) launched a pilot project involving four village cooperatives in Banyumas District, Central Java, according to a statement received in Jakarta on Friday.

“This project could serve as a model for KDMPs across the country. The used cooking oil collected will be sold to PT Pertamina Patra Niaga to be processed into aviation fuel, which will then be supplied to the aviation sector,” Cooperatives Minister Ferry Juliantono said.

He also highlighted the initiative’s potential to open up opportunities for sustainable aviation fuel exports.

Juliantono added that the pilot project uses a business model designed to generate profits for cooperatives and their members while creating opportunities for green businesses in rural areas.

Beyond its economic benefits, he said, the collection and recycling of used cooking oil were also expected to help reduce environmental pollution caused by household waste.

The minister said the project’s successful implementation would require an integrated used cooking oil collection system involving households, food stalls, restaurants, small-scale industries, and kitchens supplying meals for the Free Nutritious Meals program.

Pertamina President Director Simon Aloysius Mantiri said the company had experience in converting used cooking oil into aviation fuel. He noted that Pertamina had previously tested the fuel on flights involving transport aircraft and commercial airlines, including Garuda Indonesia and Pelita Air.

“We will continue to explore the best approaches and work with KDMPs to collect used cooking oil and process it into higher-value products at Pertamina’s refinery,” he said.
