Indonesia expands fishing village program to boost coastal welfare

Translate

Kendari (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries is advancing the Red and White Fishing Village (KNMP) program to improve the welfare of coastal communities nationwide, including fishermen and their families in Konawe District, Southeast Sulawesi.

Speaking in Konawe on Monday, Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono said he had observed firsthand the construction of infrastructure under the program in Sorue Jaya Village.

“This area is among the first 100 Red and White Fishing Village sites to complete development. Our target is to complete construction at up to 1,269 locations by the end of this year,” he said, adding that President Prabowo Subianto is expected to inaugurate the villages.

Trenggono said his ministry is providing comprehensive infrastructure and facilities for fish capture and production in Sorue Jaya, with the aim of creating new economic opportunities for local residents and boosting the region’s fisheries productivity.

He explained that the infrastructure and facilities include ice factories, cold storage facilities, and fueling stations for fishing boats, as well as a culinary center established as part of the Konawe KNMP.

“The local government is planning complementary development through a program aimed at revitalizing surrounding fishing settlements,” he added.

The minister also highlighted President Prabowo’s ambition to upgrade and modernize 5,000 fishing villages under the national priority program by the end of his presidency in 2029.

He underscored the KNMP initiative as an instrument to improve Indonesia’s coastal regions, which he described as having been “relatively underserved” throughout the country’s history.

“Having supported the agriculture sector with dams, irrigation, and subsidized fertilizer to the point that we achieved self-sufficiency, it is time to strengthen coastal areas through adequate facilities and infrastructure,” Trenggono said.

He further noted that the government intends for KNMP assets to be managed by village administrations, with support from business entities established under the Red and White Village Cooperatives program.
