Jayapura (ANTARA) - A total of 76 students from Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands are currently pursuing higher education in Indonesia under scholarship programs, according to Arief Kusdwiadnanto, the education and culture attaché at the Indonesian Embassy in Port Moresby, on Friday.

The students are pursuing their studies at various higher education institutions in Indonesia, including Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Institut Teknologi Bandung, Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Padjadjaran, and Universitas Syiah Kuala, Kusdwiadnanto said.

He explained that the scholarships come from the Developing Countries Partnership (KNB) program and the Indonesian AID Scholarship (TIAS) initiative, as well as scholarship programs offered directly by individual universities.

In 2026, 26 students from the Solomon Islands and 10 from Papua New Guinea secured scholarships, Kusdwiadnanto said.

Before beginning their university studies, the students take Indonesian-language courses either at the Indonesian Embassy in Port Moresby or in Indonesia.

Most scholarship recipients are enrolled in fields such as economics, agriculture, engineering, and health sciences.

In addition to scholarships for university students, Kusdwiadnanto said the Indonesian government was also providing scholarships to five students currently studying in Jambi.

"The Indonesian Embassy in Port Moresby provides instructors for Papua New Guinea citizens who wish to learn Indonesian, helping prepare them for their studies when they eventually pursue higher education in Indonesia," Kusdwiadnanto said.
