Johor B40 students receive 5,000 free 5G SIM packs for online learning

JOHOR BARU: Low-income (B40) students in Johor received 5,000 YES 5G prepaid SIM packs worth RM100,000 to support home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) during the recent haze.
In a Facebook post, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, said the initiative was driven by the queen, Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, who was concerned about the education and welfare of students facing internet access constraints.
"Each SIM pack comes with 50 gigabytes (GB) of free high-speed internet data to make it easier for students to access digital educational materials and follow PdPR sessions more smoothly," the post said.
The contribution, under the Johor Digital Connectivity Initiative, is a collaboration between the Raja Zarith Sofiah Foundation of Johor (YRZSNJ), YTL Communications Sdn Bhd, and the Johor State Education Department.
YTL Communications chief executive officer Wing K. Lee and YRZSNJ chief executive officer Hishammuddin Abdul Rahim officiated the handover ceremony at Menara YTL in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Also present were YTL Communications deputy chief executive officer Jacob Yeoh Keong Yeow, YTL Communications chief marketing officer Chay Wan Nee, and YRZSNJ corporate communications manager Dawson Yeang.
Hishammuddin thanked YTL Communications for the contribution, saying it would help bridge the digital divide among B40 families.
He said the initiative was vital to ensure students from less privileged families were not left behind due to limited connectivity.
Wing said he hoped the free SIM packs would help students in Johor keep pace with their studies.
