Table View beachfront project set for festive season wrap-up

Translate

The upgrade of Cape Town’s Table View beachfront is slated for completion in less than two months.

In July 2022, the City of Cape Town commenced the project, which spans three kilometres of coastline from Dolphin Beach in the south to Bokkombaai in the north.

Now, significant progress has been made, ensuring that the project will conclude in mid-December, just before the festive season.

TABLE VIEW BEACHFRONT: WHAT UPGRADE ENTAILS

According to the City, the Table View beachfront project involves:

  • Rehabilitating the dune system from Dolphin Beach to Bokkombaai.
  • Improving pedestrian access to the beach and parking.
  • Creating a new pathway along the coast.
  • Implementing wind-blown sand management.
  • Upgrading various ablution facilities, services, and vegetation and wind-net infrastructure.

Alderman Eddie Andrews, the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, recently visited the beachfront and gave insight into the progress achieved.

“The new 3km long coastal walkway now extends from Marine Circle to Bokkombaai,” said Andrews. “We have restored the existing walkway, as well as the parking areas, and created new beach access paths between Marine Circle and Dolphin Beach.”

He also lauded the rehabilitation of the dune system as a “critical component” in sand management and boosting the beachfront’s resilience to coastal erosion and storm damage. “It is always more cost-effective to invest in improving the coastline’s resilience than to undertake emergency repairs or restore services after a storm.”

Other completed improvements include a new parking area opposite Visagie Street; upgraded parking areas along Beach Boulevard and Otto du Plessis Drive; and a new two-kilometre coastal walkway from Marine Circle to Bokkomsbaai.

WHAT’S NEXT?

The upgrade to the Table View beachfront is now in its final phase.

Remaining works include the refurbishment of the ablution facilities at Dolphin Beach and Bokkombaai; the connection of the upgraded facilities to the City’s sewer network; and the installation of a post-and-rail fence between the Bokkomsbaai parking area and Foam Street.

If everything remains on schedule, visitors to Table View will be able to enjoy the new-and-improved beachfront just in time for the festive season.
