When it comes to some of the best open-world RPGs, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has a solid place on the list. First released back in 2015 and marking the third installment in The Witcher franchise, it serves as a sequel to 2011's The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, but it is definitely considered the best of the bunch.

Developed by CD Projekt RED, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is based on the stories by author Andrzej Sapkowski, and follows the story of Geralt of Rivia, a monster slayer who must set out on a journey to find his adopted daughter, Ciri, who is currently on the run from the Wild Hunt due to her extraordinary powers.

Now, over a decade on from its launch, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt holds over 200 game of the year awards, and with over 65 million units sold, as of May 2026, it is also one of the best-selling video games of all time. So, it is perhaps no wonder that a third DLC is currently in development, alongside The Witcher IV, which launches some time in 2028.

The DLC, titled Songs of the Past, will be the third DLC for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, following Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, which were released in 2015 and 2016, respectively. It is these older DLCs that are now available to download for free for those who own the base game.

This comes after CD Projekt RED headed to Gamescom to talk more about The Witcher IV, including its 2028 release window. However, it was here that the team announced that Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine would remain free for all those who own The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, giving all players the chance to catch up on content ahead of the launch of both Songs of the Past and The Witcher IV. Of course, this also helps celebrate the arrival of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered which launches on 29 September.

Most importantly, there is no catch. Whilst you do need to own a copy of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, you do not need any subscriptions, and there will be no hidden costs. You can simply download and play them right now.

Over on r/gaming, fans reacted to the news of the free DLCs, taking to the comments of an announcement post to share their thoughts. "Alright, going to start my 10th playthrough," one comment read. Another said, "I had over 120 hours in The Witcher, but stopped playing due to personal issues. When I tried playing again, it was the dreaded loop of not knowing what I was doing, but not wanting to start over either due to the time spent. Now I finally have a reason for a fresh restart."

With some fans calling Hearts of Stone and Blood of Wine some of the best expansions ever made, this is a deal that you do not want to miss out on, especially if you are looking forward to the launch of The Witcher IV.
