7.7-magnitude quake in Indonesia linked to Flores fault: BMKG
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said a 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck East Nusa Tenggara Province on Saturday was triggered by the Flores back-arc thrust fault.
“The Flores back-arc fault has a maximum earthquake potential of 7.8 to 7.9. Today, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake occurred,” Wijayanto, director of BMKG’s Earthquake and Tsunami Center, said.
He said a 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck the region in 1992, causing severe damage.
“After more than 30 years, such a strong earthquake has occurred again. We will continue to closely monitor aftershocks,” Wijayanto said.
BMKG lifted its tsunami early warning at 7:30 a.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB), or 0030 GMT.
The agency said it would continue monitoring aftershocks and provide regular updates to the public.
“We have ended the tsunami early warning, but we will continue monitoring sea-level activity recorded by tide gauges,” Wijayanto said.
