If you have not read the original Divergent series, or watched the popular YA films, consider this your spoiler warning. Veronica Roth has returned to dystopian Chicago with The Sixth Faction, the first book in a new alternate-universe duology. The novel, which has been available for preorder since April, arrived on Oct. 6 and asks what might have happened if Beatrice “Tris” Prior had chosen a different faction — Abnegation. And yes, Four is still part of her story.

On Oct. 2, Oprah Daily published an exclusive excerpt from the new book, giving readers the MMC’s perspective. Two days later, Roth posted a video on Instagram featuring an excerpt from the audiobook, confirming Four’s role in the story. “Setting your minds at ease once and for all about the whole Four thing,” the author captioned the post. 

The Sixth Faction comes 13 years after fans were left devastated by Tris’ death in Allegiant. Now, Roth is bringing Tris back, though not by undoing that ending. Instead, she is exploring a reality where Tris takes a different path in life altogether. Will she survive this fate? Let’s find out.

The fourth book expands the series through Tobias “Four” Eaton’s perspective, providing additional background on his character and experiences. Together, the four books give readers the main story alongside Four’s perspective.

Roth also wrote a 24-page epilogue to Allegiant, which puts a lot into perspective when considering the new book. In We Can Be Mended, the author paired grief-stricken Four and Christina together after they mourn the loss of Tris and Will.

The Divergent series is set in a society divided into five factions, each built around a core value: Abnegation values selflessness, Dauntless values bravery, Erudite values intelligence, Amity values peace, and Candor values honesty. Beatrice “Tris” Prior, who grows up in Abnegation, must choose which faction to join. She selects Dauntless and begins training while discovering that her society’s faction system is more complicated than it appears. The series follows Tris as she navigates faction conflicts, political unrest, personal relationships, and revelations about how her world is governed.
