Max Allegri warned Napoli ‘need to feel angry’ after their 1-1 draw away to Fiorentina, must be more determined, and told off Rasmus Hojlund for ‘getting pig-headed.’

The Partenopei had taken the lead at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in the early kick-off thanks to the Billy Gilmour volley on a corner kick routine, but it was cancelled out by a heavily-deflected Alex Jimenez effort.

“I thought it was a good technical performance, there were the two incidents off the crossbar, but at times we need to be more determined in front of goal at both ends,” Allegri told DAZN Italia.

“So much depends on the determination with which you attack the ball, both going forward and when defending in your own area.”

Fiorentina looked increasingly exhausted as the game wore on, but Napoli were unable to take advantage, despite dominating possession in the latter stages.

“We might be growing, but if we don’t leave the field angry today, then it means we’ve still got a very long way to go. Having lots of possession isn’t enough and we ought to be creating and converting more scoring opportunities,” added Allegri.

“We train to improve everything, but what we absolutely must do is show more focus, because with a minute to go we lost the ball cheaply and were caught unbalanced. We need in those situations to at least bring home the result.”

Napoli are now six points off the leading pack after the opening five rounds, and lost their first Champions League fixture at home to Arsenal, so how does Allegri view the title race?

“I think there are many strong teams this season, so it’s a very difficult league. We must try to recover the players with certain characteristics, stay calm and do more.

“We need to leave here angry today, because we could’ve done better in various areas, but we’ve got to be angry at this result, otherwise it’s worrying.”

Hojlund was substituted surprisingly early in the Fiorentina match, making way for Lorenzo Lucca before the hour mark, so what prompted that decision?

“He worked hard, but there are moments in a game where you have difficulties. He got a bit pig-headed at points. We need to work on our limitations, because if we only assume we’re better than the opponents, we’ll pay the price. That is something we absolutely must improve,” concluded Allegri.

In the press conference, the coach also noted that Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa was suffering from “groin discomfort” when substituted.
