Bierhoff: ‘I hope Tresoldi chooses Germany, FA in contact with him’

Ex-Milan striker and former technical director of the German FA Oliver Bierhoff says that he hopes Nicolo Tresoldi opts to represent Germany over Italy at senior international level, and says that ‘as far as I know’, the DFB is ‘in contact’ with the Club Brugge striker.
Bierhoff weighs in on Tresoldi’s international decision
Tresoldi was born in Italy to parents of Italian descent, but moved to Germany as a teenager and has gone on to represent them at U19 and U21 level. He has not yet appeared for either nation at senior level, and is understood to be taking his time over a final decision.

Recent reports indicate that Tresoldi wishes to complete the U21 European Championship campaign with Germany over the summer before making a final decision over his allegiance at senior international level.
Interest in the 22-year-old shot up even further earlier this week when he netted a hat-trick in a surprise 4-3 underdog victory for Club Brugge against Inter in San Siro on Tuesday night.
Former Milan striker Bierhoff, who spent 18 years in the German Football Association (DFB) set-up, serving as technical director between 2018 and 2022, has recently spoken about Tresoldi’s options in an interview with German reporter Martin Volkmar.

Unsurprisingly, Bierhoff hopes that Tresoldi goes on to represent Germany at senior international level, and says that as far as he is aware, the German FA is trying their best to persuade him
“His growth has been fantastic,” said Bierhoff (via Mediaset) The fact that he’s been able to establish himself abroad has been remarkable and has helped him take a big step forwards. He’s become physically stronger and has gained a lot more confidence.
“The fact that he’s scoring in the Champions League is a good sign and it shows that he’s able to hold his own at the highest international levels, not only in the Belgian league.”
Both Germany and Italy have had ‘issues’ at centre-forward in recent years, and both would gratefully add Tresoldi to their attacking options ahead of the 2028 European Championships.

“If he continues like this, he will be able to solve the Germany national team’s striker problem,” Bierhoff continued. “That’s what I’m hoping for, of course, and that is why I believe we shouldn’t waste any time. But as far as I know, the German Football Association is already in contact with him.
“Of course, I hope he chooses Germany because we need all the talent we can get, especially in attack. However, I believe that it is a decision he should make with his heart, not just for sporting reasons.”
Tresoldi is also a boyhood Milan fan and recently admitted it was a ‘dream come true’ to play in San Siro and score a hat-trick against Inter.
Bierhoff has no doubt that Tresoldi could make the step-up to a ‘big’ club like Milan in the near future, even if the Rossoneri are not quite at the levels they were in the 1990s and 2000s.
“Milan aren’t at the levels they were when I had the privilege of playing there, but he does have the potential to play in a big, internationally renowned club like that.”
