Here’s what actually happens between winning and getting your money

Translate

Matching all six numbers is the moment everyone dreams about, but very few players actually understand the Lotto winnings claim process that follows.

Small wins can be sorted out on the spot

Licensed retailers can pay out prizes of up to R2,000 immediately.

At their own discretion, some will go up to R5,000.

Prizes between R2,001 and R49,999.99 need to be claimed at a post office instead.

The first 72 hours matter most

If you played online or via a participating banking app and won up to R249,999, Sizekhaya processes that payout within 72 working hours, either as an EFT from your Sizekhaya iLottery Wallet, or paid directly into your bank account if you played through a banking app.

Capitec’s own terms confirm winnings under R249,999.99 are paid out within seven working days of the winners being announced.

Bigger wins mean a trip to a regional office

Once you’re above R50,000, the process changes completely.

You’ll need to fill out a claim form, bring valid ID, and collect your prize in person at one of Sizekhaya’s eight regional offices, no online shortcut exists at this tier.

If you bought a physical ticket, it needs to be validated first, and Sizekhaya can still honour a torn, faded or damaged ticket as long as the serial number is intact and your details match its records.

The Lotto winnings claim process clock that’s always running

Regardless of the amount, you have 365 days from the draw date to claim every prize.

After that, the ticket expires, the money doesn’t simply disappear: the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund receives half to support causes like sport, arts and heritage, while Sizekhaya keeps the other half to help fund future guaranteed jackpots.

It’s worth remembering that big wins aren’t instant, even once you’ve been verified. Patience matters just as much as checking your numbers in the first place.

Eish, imagine matching all six numbers and then having to wait days just to actually see the money, hey.

Would the waiting period bother you, or would you just be grateful to have won at all?
