After a strong performance in Saturday's win at Rutgers, Michigan quarterback Tommy Carr has been named the team's starter for the "foreseeable future," coach Kyle Whittingham said Monday.
Carr, a freshman and the grandson of former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, made his second straight start against Rutgers and had 266 passing yards and a touchdown, and added 54 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns in Michigan's 28-21 win. Whittingham had been non-committal about a starting quarterback after Carr replaced Bryce Underwood in an Oct. 17 win against Penn State. The coach praised Carr's mobility added to a complete performance against the Scarlet Knights.
Tommy Carr, the younger brother of Notre Dame starting quarterback CJ Carr, has completed 72.1% of his passes for 503 yards in four games this season. He was the No. 24 pocket passer and a three-star recruit in the 2026 class. Underwood, the top recruit in the 2025 class, started for Michigan throughout last season but struggled before being benched.
Michigan hosts in-state rival Michigan State this coming Saturday.
