Ondo warns against consumption of uncertified herbal concoctions

The Ondo State Government has warned residents against the consumption of uncertified herbal concoctions, unapproved substances, and other products whose safety for human consumption has not been established.

The warning followed a recent incident in Odigbo Local Government Area of the state, which reportedly resulted in the loss of lives.

In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku on Thursday, the state government urged residents to exercise caution and avoid substances of doubtful origin.

“The safety, health and wellbeing of the people remain key priorities of the present administration,” Ajanaku said.

He also cautioned sellers, producers and distributors of uncertified substances to immediately stop the production, sale and distribution of such products, warning that they pose serious risks to public health.

“The production, sale and distribution of unapproved substances pose serious risks to public health and may attract appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law,” the commissioner said.

The government further warned citizens, particularly youths, against drug abuse and the unauthorised use or consumption of substances capable of causing serious health complications or death.

According to Ajanaku, residents should obtain medicines and other consumable products only from authorised and regulated outlets, while seeking professional medical advice instead of relying on unverified remedies.

On the Odigbo incident, the commissioner said the state government was investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths to establish the actual cause.

“The Government is currently investigating the Odigbo incident to establish the actual cause of the deaths,” he said, adding that relevant government agencies were “working diligently to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

He appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could cause unnecessary panic.

The government also commended the Chairman of Odigbo Local Government Area, Hon. Taiwo Adegboye, for his prompt intervention and support during the incident.

Ajanaku assured residents that necessary measures were being taken to safeguard public health and prevent a recurrence.

“The Government will continue to take appropriate measures, in accordance with existing laws and regulations, to protect the health and safety of citizens,” he said.

He urged members of the public to report suspicious activities involving the production, sale or distribution of dangerous, illegal or unapproved substances to the appropriate authorities.

The commissioner stressed that protecting lives and promoting a safe and healthy society remained a collective responsibility requiring the cooperation of all residents.
