The Cat in the Hat is an upcoming animated fantasy movie based on the 1957 book by Dr Seuss. It is being distributed by Warner Bros Pictures, which will finally give it a solid opening weekend at the North American box office. However, based on the early estimates, the film will not beat the domestic debut gross of another Dr. Seuss adaptation, The Grinch. Keep scrolling for the film’s opening weekend projection at the North American box office.

The animated feature, directed by Alessandro Carloni and Erica Rivinoja, is the second film based on the book of the same name, following the 2003 live-action film. Bill Hader voices the titular character alongside Matt Berry, Quinta Brunson, Xochitl Gomez, Tiago Martinez, Giancarlo Esposito, and America Ferrera in other characters’ roles.

The Cat in the Hat’s opening weekend projection in North America

The film still has almost a month before release, and the early estimates are encouraging. According to Box Office Pro‘s latest report, The Cat in the Hat is tracking to earn between $40 million and $50 million on its opening weekend at the North American box office. If it lands within this range, then Warner Bros Pictures will finally have its first $40 million opener of 2026. Digger was the studio’s latest release, and it conjured $8 million only in its opening weekend.

How does it stack up against The Grinch?

The Grinch was released in 2018 and, on the same weekend, had a much better opening at the North American box office. It collected $67.5 million in its debut weekend. Therefore, this upcoming animation will not surpass the 2018 adaptation. The Grinch collected $272.2 million in its lifetime at the North American box office.

Based on the early estimates, the upcoming film would beat the 2003 live-action adaptation. For the record, The Cat in the Hat collected $38.3 million at the domestic box office, and the animated feature will beat it if it lands in the projected range. But there is still time in the release, and the numbers are subject to change.

More about the movie

The film follows the Cat in the Hat, who gets one final chance to prove his worth to his frustrated boss and save his iconic striped hat. Working as an agent for the Institute of Imagination and Inspiration, he takes on a challenging mission to bring happiness to siblings Gabby and Sebastian, who are struggling to adjust to life in a new town. The Dr Seuss adaptation will be released on November 6, clashing with Godzilla Minus Zero.
