NEW DELHI: Delhi Police registered an FIR against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for allegedly assaulting police personnel and obstructing government work during a
protest
in the capital, news agency PTI reported citing police sources on Thursday.The case was registered in connection with incidents that took place during the Congress-led protest on Wednesday.Several other Congress leaders and party workers who participated in the demonstration have also been named in the FIR, the sources said.
Police are examining the allegations and the role of those involved in the protest.Earlier on Wednesday, Rahul, Priyanka had led INDIA bloc leaders in a street protest, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.Police detained 91 people during the demonstration, including several MPs and other political leaders.The protest took an intense turn after police stopped the protesters while they were travelling in buses towards Jantar Mantar for a surprise sit-in.The leaders had earlier attended a lunch meeting at a South Indian vegetarian restaurant on Janpath.Priyanka and several other women leaders lay on the road holding copies of the Constitution. They were later removed and taken away in police buses as opposition members raised slogans.MPs from the Congress, Trinamool Congress, CPM, CPI, RJD, IUML and several other parties were among those participating in the protest.
