Our most recent update about the plans for a BioShock movie are especially exciting to note given the overall movie releases and results of 2026, which set the stage for a BioShock film to release in the future and succeed. The atmospheric and detailed worlds depicted within the BioShock game series are ones that are primed for adaptation into other formats, with it being something of a surprise that the franchise hasn't had more in the way of adaptations outside of the 2011 novel BioShock: Rapture.

This is doubly true given the BioShock trilogy contains some stellar world-building, attention-grabbing scenes, and action-packed stories that come complete with their own unforgettable plot twists, while also having enough of a richly fleshed out world that you could convincingly set up a BioShock movie without ever needing to adapt the central stories of the games themselves.

Plans for a BioShock movie have been in the works for quite some time now, with prior plans for a film running between 2008-2013, when it was revealed to be officially canceled. Years after this, Netflix announced in 2022 that a new BioShock film was in the works, though the wait for the movie had left fans concerned the movie might be once again canceled following the most recent hiatus in updates about the project - until the latest comments from its director.

The Latest BioShock Movie News Is Promising Given 2026's Biggest Film Hits

A Little Sister and a Big Daddy in BioShock

The Direct's interview with director Francis Lawrence recently confirmed a BioShock movie is still in the works. This is promising to note despite the long wait for the film to come to fruition given the wider landscape of 2026's movie roster, which has to some degree primed moviegoing audiences to be further engaged with a sci-fi video game adaptation like BioShock.

First and foremost, the world of video game adaptations has fallen into a new era in the modern day, compared to the age of them largely being regarded as oftentimes sub-par and taking liberties with the source material at hand. Plenty of 2026's most well-regarded and engaged-with films were video game movie adaptations, and this also helped the subgenre become one of the year's most financially fruitful, with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Resident Evil, and Iron Lung all garnering their own positive results.

On the other side of things, 2026 was also a key for sci-fi, particularly thanks to the stellar reception around Project Hail Mary, which is currently the seventh highest grossing movie of the year. Combined, the dystopian sci-fi angling of the BioShock universe appears one that could be a particularly big hit with audiences, so long as those involved with the project set it up to reflect the strengths of the game series.

During Francis Lawrence's interview with The Direct, he mentioned one of the challenges that had delayed progress on the BioShock film project was the difficulties around translating the aspect of the games wherein you play as the main character - meaning you automatically connect with them, and can believe your and their experiences are mirrored - into movie format, where this isn't as possible.

Promisingly, 2026's video game movie adaptations do appear to have painted a pretty detailed picture of how to approach this matter, as all of them can be seen to have to navigate this issue. This is especially clear with Iron Lung, since the original game is very similar to the first two BioShock games in the way it handles having its player character be controlled in first person as a stand-in of sorts for the player themselves.

Though each film deals with the adaptation process in different ways - which makes sense, since a Mario movie and a Resident Evil movie have drastically different aims overall - they do share an ability to dissect the core aspects of what makes a specific character work, and show how to add small details that make each figure feel like their own distinct person, which would no doubt go a long way for BioShock's protagonist also.
