Egypt and Malaysia elevate strategic relations

Translate

Egypt and Malaysia reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the strategic partnership between the two nations and expanding cooperation across political, economic, investment, defense, and security sectors.

They also pledged to intensify coordination on regional and international issues of mutual interest, work towards enhancing stability in the Gulf region and West Asia, and ensure freedom of maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law.

In a joint statement issued during Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s visit to Malaysia on October 9–10, 2026, the two countries announced the elevation of their bilateral relations to the level of a strategic partnership.

This move aims to bolster joint cooperation across various fields, support mutual interests, and contribute to international stability and prosperity.

The Egyptian and Malaysian leaders emphasized the importance of regular dialogue through existing bilateral institutional mechanisms and agreed to hold the second meeting of the Joint Commission, as well as the second round of bilateral consultations, at the earliest opportunity.

The leaders commended the growth of the economic partnership between Egypt and Malaysia, highlighting significant untapped economic potential.

Both sides agreed to boost trade and investment while encouraging business-led cooperation across several priority sectors.

These sectors include agriculture, the Halal industry, education, technical and vocational education and training (TVET), digital transformation, renewable energy, infrastructure development, the automotive industry, manufacturing, and semiconductors.

Economic hubs

Both sides emphasized that the strategic locations of Egypt and Malaysia position them to serve as economic hubs and gateways to regional and international markets.

Malaysia acts as a gateway for Egypt to the markets of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, while Egypt serves as a gateway for Malaysia to broader Arab, African, and European markets.

Regarding defense and security, the two leaders highlighted the strength of the friendly relations between their countries and the fruitful cooperation they share, underscoring the importance of further enhancing these ties.

The statement also stressed the importance of people-to-people exchanges in strengthening the bonds of friendship between the two nations, including through scholarship programs, human capital development, and academic cooperation.

On air connectivity, both sides emphasized its importance in supporting economic cooperation and encouraged their respective national airlines to explore opportunities for enhanced collaboration.

They also reaffirmed their commitment to facilitating reciprocal travel and strengthening people-to-people ties, recognizing the role these play in boosting tourism, trade, and cultural exchange.
