A 12-year-old schoolgirl has died after she was hit by a double-decker bus.

The tragedy unfolded in the Scottish town of Kilwinning, Ayrshire, just after 1.10pm on Tuesday.

The young girl was reportedly struck by the vehicle during her school lunchbreak.

She was pronounced dead at the scene and her family has been informed.

No one else was injured in the crash and police enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

Lauchlan Way, where the incident took place, was taped off by police but has since reopened.

Investigators were seen inspecting the bus before it was towed away.

One local parent told The Sun: 'My son was heading for his lunch from school and heard it happen.

'He heard screams. I think everyone standing nearby got a fright and was left traumatised. It's just terrible.'
