Russia responds to US warning of Moscow attack plan

Translate

Russia's FSB security service says it has carried out "appropriate" measures after the US embassy in Moscow warned of a planned "terrorist" attack in the capital this weekend.

The US embassy said earlier it was "aware of a credible threat of a mass-casualty event" on Saturday, local time, at the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve in Moscow.

The US government had coordinated "with appropriate Russian authorities on a response", it said.

It advised people: "Avoid the area, stay alert, and avoid crowds."

The US embassy did not give details on who was plotting the attack.

The Tsaritsyno museum is an imperial palace and park complex that is a popular place to visit in southern Moscow, especially on weekends.

Russian Telegram channel Baza, which reportedly has links to law enforcement, said the park was now closed and "open only for exits".

"Law enforcement officers are on the premises,"

it reported.

Russia's FSB security service said earlier it had received information from the US "regarding the preparation of a terrorist attack".

"Appropriate work is underway," it was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies.

In March 2024, the US Embassy warned that extremists had imminent plans for an attack in Moscow.

Days later, gunmen attacked the Crocus City Hall concert venue outside Moscow, killing more than 140 people.

The latest sharing of information underlines the increasingly close relationship between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Despite Moscow's continuing war against Ukraine, Mr Trump has appeared more accommodating towards the Kremlin than America's traditional European allies.

Last month, Mr Trump struck a controversial deal to purchase Russian diesel, reversing years of Western efforts to isolate Moscow economically.

The agreement could provide Mr Putin with billions of dollars to sustain his war.

Meanwhile, European media reports that Mr Putin will accept Mr Trump's invitation and attend December's G20 summit in the US.

Mr Putin has not attended a G20 summit since 2019, with Russia ejected from the more exclusive G8 after its annexation of Crimea in 2014.

The traditional "family photo" at the G20 foreign ministers' meeting in Atlanta this weekend — a picture of all the gathered ministers, taken at each edition of the event — was cancelled after multiple US allies, including Australia, refused to be photographed alongside Mr Putin's foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov.
