Pride of Rivers, Flying Antelopes in top-of-table clash

Translate

Rivers United host defending champions Rangers in Port Harcourt on Sunday in the biggest game of Nigeria Premier Football League Matchday 11, with the two sides level on 17 points at the top of the table.

Rivers lead on goal difference after 10 matches, but Rangers have played only eight and have two games in hand, so the contest could shape the early title race. The Pride of Rivers will be eager to protect their position after their unbeaten start ended with a 2-1 defeat away to Bendel Insurance last Sunday.

They have the league’s strongest defensive record and have yet to concede at home this season, and that home form is their biggest source of confidence.

Rangers arrive after a painful week. The Flying Antelopes were knocked out of the CAF Champions League by MC Alger on Friday last week, and they must now turn their attention to retaining the league title.

They have been among the most dangerous sides on the road, scoring seven away goals. Only Sporting Lagos, with 10, have scored more.

History favours the hosts. Since the club changed its name from Dolphins FC, Rivers have won all 10 previous league meetings with Rangers in Port Harcourt. The last time the Enugu side won there was in 2003, when they claimed a 1-0 victory.

Rivers will also have some reinforcement. Utake Emmanuel has been released from the Olympic Eagles’ camp to return to club duty for the weekend.

A win would strengthen the hosts’ grip on top spot, while Rangers have the chance to make a statement in their title defence, with two matches still to play.
