‘The Batman 2’ Pauses Production as Director Matt Reeves Steps Away for a ‘Family Matter’

Warner Bros. and DC Studios have halted production on “The Batman Part II,” as director Matt Reeves takes a pause to deal with personal matters.

“Production on ‘The Batman Part II’ has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter,” a rep said in a statement. “Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.”

Robert Pattinson returns as the Caped Crusader in the highly anticipated superhero sequel, which has already experienced several delays. “The Batman Part II” was originally set to open on Oct. 2, 2026, before Warner Bros. delayed it to Oct. 1, 2027. Then, in July, the studio pushed the film to February 2028. Reeves’ first “Batman” was released in March 2022.

Along with Pattinson, other cast members include Scarlett Johansson, Colin Farrell, Sebastian Stan, Andy Serkis and Jeffrey Wright.

After the first delay, DC Studios boss James Gunn took to Threads to justify the push, writing that it’s “fairly common” for major blockbusters to have yearslong gaps between sequels.

“To be fair, a 5-year gap or more is fairly common in sequels,” Gunn wrote on Threads at the time. “7 years between ‘Alien’ and ‘Aliens.’ 14 years between ‘Incredibles.’ 7 years between the first two ‘Terminators.’ 13 years between ‘Avatars.’ 36 years between ‘Top Guns.’ And, of course, six years between ‘Guardians Vol 2’ and ‘Vol 3.’”

In a recent interview with Collider, Pattinson said “The Batman Part II” is a completely “different take” from the first film.

“It’s so ambitious. I mean, I sort of said the other day on something that the first one was a different take on a Batman movie, and this one is another,” he told Collider in a recent interview. “It’s a real left turn from the first one, but somehow it keeps elements of the kind of feel of it. But it just feels really ambitious, and I’m excited to see how it turns out.”
