BATU PAHAT: The Form Four pupil who was believed to have been murdered at a school in Yong Peng was laid to rest at the Kampung Parit Arshad Muslim cemetery, here.

The body of Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal arrived at her grandmother's house in Kampung Parit Selamat, Yong Peng, at 6.30pm after a post-mortem examination at Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital (HSNI) here.

The funeral prayers for the girl were performed at her grandmother's house and at the Kampung Parit Arshad mosque, attended by more than 100 congregants made up of relatives, acquaintances and villagers.

Many were unable to hold back their tears as the body was brought into her grandmother's house on its final journey before burial.

Earlier, the 16-year-old suspect who was detained at 7pm yesterday was remanded for six days by the Batu Pahat magistrate's court.

Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said in a statement police had seized a mobile phone, a set of clothing and slippers following the suspect's arrest.

He said the suspect was detained by a team of Johor Criminal Investigation Department policemen, aided by a team from the Batu Pahat CID, a few hours after the incident.

"The suspect was detained around Yong Peng after police received information about the discovery of the victim, who was unconscious and covered in blood.

"The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder," he said.
