When is the cheapest time to visit Kruger National Park?

Translate

A Kruger National Park holiday can get expensive, particularly during peak periods when demand for accommodation is high.

But travellers looking to save money can often get better value by choosing the right time of year.

So, when is the cheapest time to visit Kruger National Park?

The summer and shoulder-season months are generally the best bet for budget travellers.

Kruger’s rainy season runs from October to March, while the dry season lasts from April to September. SANParks notes that the dry winter months traditionally offer the best game viewing because vegetation becomes thinner and animals are more concentrated around available water.

That popularity can make the dry-season period more desirable for visitors.

The warmer, wetter months can therefore offer an opportunity for travellers who are more focused on lower prices and fewer crowds than on peak game-viewing conditions.

January to March can be good for bargain hunters

The first few months of the year are worth looking at if price is your priority.

SANParks has previously offered discounted accommodation during parts of January to March, and its 2026 pensioner concession, for example, included 21 January to 20 March at participating Kruger camps.

The exact discounts don’t apply to every visitor, however, so ordinary travellers should check the accommodation rate for their chosen dates rather than assuming a particular percentage reduction.

The weather is also hot and wet, with more vegetation making some animals harder to spot.

April and May offer a useful compromise

If you want better game viewing without necessarily travelling during the busiest winter period, April and May can be worth considering.

The rains begin to ease, the landscape remains relatively green, and temperatures become more comfortable. The park moves towards its dry season, when wildlife viewing traditionally improves.

June to August is one of the most popular periods for a Kruger National Park safari. The weather is generally dry and pleasant during the day, while sparse vegetation and limited water make wildlife easier to find.

The downside is that this is also a particularly attractive time to visit, so budget accommodation can be harder to secure.

If you’re travelling during these months, booking well in advance is important.

September and October can be another sweet spot for budget Kruger National Park visitors

Late winter and early spring can offer a useful balance between weather, wildlife and price. The park begins warming up, while the landscape is still relatively dry.

By October, however, the rainy season starts to return, with SANParks describing October to March as Kruger National Park’s rainy season.

But the cheapest dates aren’t necessarily determined by the weather alone.

Weekdays can be cheaper and easier to book than weekends, while school holidays and long weekends can increase demand.

SANParks’ senior-citizen concession dates also show how its discounted periods can change from year to year, with certain dates, camps and accommodation types specifically included or excluded.

So if you’re trying to save, compare several dates rather than simply choosing an entire month.

So, when should you book?

SANParks currently has bookings open into 2027, with booking periods changing periodically. The current booking period runs through 31 August 2027, with another booking window opening in October 2026 for stays through October 2027.

For popular camps, especially during school holidays and the dry season, booking early is the safest way to secure the accommodation you want.
