The Social Reckoning has officially reached a verdict with critics.

Sixteen years ago, The Social Network dramatized Mark Zuckerberg's college life and Facebook's early days, with Aaron Sorkin creating the biographical story. The legendary screenwriter now returns to depict an even darker era for the popular social media platform with The Social Reckoning, covering the 2021 whistleblower leaks and the Wall Street Journal's exposé. Treated as a companion piece rather than a direct sequel, the biopic is one of the year's most anticipated movies, and the first reviews are in.

With 33 reviews, The Social Reckoning debuts with a lukewarm 67% on Rotten Tomatoes, failing to live up to Aaron Sorkin's near-masterpiece, The Social Network, which earned 96%. In fact, whereas the 2010 Oscar winner is Sorkin's highest-rated movie, the 2026 companion piece is currently his second-lowest, just ahead of Malice (54%).

Early reactions warned that The Social Reckoning was the shadow of the 2010 classic. Unfortunately, critics noted that the new companion movie lacks the sharpness, high energy, and real stakes of The Social Network. While Fincher's direction built the story's suspense and visual appeal, Sorkin's style in the 2026 biopic was mundane and too dense, though his fast dialogue remains one of its strengths. However, it's not enough to overcome the style, which reviews described as a preachy lecture.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Strong's performance as Mark Zuckerberg is very divisive. Although some critics call his approach captivating, others feel his robotic portrayal reads more like a caricature and is detached from Jesse Eisenberg's version in the 2010 movie. Meanwhile, some reviews were also disappointed that Mark Zuckerberg had a secondary role compared to The Social Network, where he was the central focus.

In ScreenRant's review of The Social Reckoning, Graeme Guttman said Sorkin's new biopic "can't outrun the feeling that it's dated," but the standout was the cast's performance. Oscar-winning actor Mikey Madison was the "stand out" as the whistleblower Frances, while Strong helps "sell the drama on a level that rises above prestige television."

Although Sorkin brings his "signature heavy-handedness," his direction doesn't quite reach Fincher's level, as he "plays it straight, delivering a procedural drama about Horwitz’s writing of The Facebook File." Still, The Social Reckoning has its moments, earning it 6 out of 10 stars.

The Social Reckoning underwent several creative and casting changes from the 2010 Oscar-winning movie. Sorkin took over as director after David Fincher couldn't return. More importantly, Eisenberg opted not to reprise the infamous Facebook founder, since he no longer wanted to be associated with the role, so Strong took over. The new cast also includes Madison, Jeremy Allen White, Bill Burr, Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, and Billy Magnussen.

The Social Reckoning will be in theaters on October 9, 2026.
