Charlie Cox's Daredevil Is Officially The MCU's Most Important Hero In 2027

After flooding the market with mediocre movies and streaming shows for the past few years, Marvel Studios has finally figured out that it needs to slow down, take stock, figure out what’s working, and get a bit more discerning when it comes to greenlighting projects for production. We need more Spider-Man: Brand New Days and fewer Secret Invasions, and that’s the new mandate for the MCU.

The only two MCU movies releasing this year are two of the surest, safest bets in superhero cinema — a Spider-Man movie and an Avengers movie — and after that, Marvel will leave us hanging until it’s time for the next Avengers movie. After about half a decade with three or even four films a year, not to mention extremely hit-and-miss output, the MCU is finally taking a break and streamlining its sprawling ensemble. Avengers: Secret Wars will be a sort of soft reset for the MCU, keeping what’s working and stripping away everything else.

After Secret Wars, the MCU is going gung-ho on introducing its own X-Men lineup. We’re also getting a new Black Panther, a new Ghost Rider, and, while it hasn’t been confirmed yet, Spider-Man 5 is a given. Starting in 2028, we’re getting a fresh start for the MCU, but it’ll be a pretty barren 2027 in the meantime.

Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 Is The Only MCU Release Between Avengers: Doomsday & Avengers: Secret Wars

The MCU will have its slowest year since 2024 when 2027 rolls around. In 2024, after the 2023 strikes had pushed everything back, Marvel Studios only released one movie in theaters: Deadpool & Wolverine. In 2027, the MCU is similarly only releasing one movie: Avengers: Secret Wars. In between Infinity War and Endgame, we were treated to Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel, but Marvel is going to leave us hanging between Doomsday and Secret Wars.

We’re getting new seasons of X-Men ’97 and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, but those animated shows exist in their own separate worlds. The only official Sacred Timeline-based MCU release between Doomsday and Secret Wars will be Daredevil: Born Again season 3. So, suddenly, Charlie Cox’s Man Without Fear is a lot more important to the overall MCU.

Even after Born Again brought him into the mainline MCU, Cox’s Daredevil has always been kept at arm’s length from the rest of the Avengers. He’s shared the screen with Spidey and She-Hulk, but we’ve never seen the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen in a proper MCU team-up on the big screen. But, if Daredevil: Born Again’s third season is the only morsel of Marvel content we’re getting before Secret Wars, maybe that’s about to change.

Daredevil: Born Again Ending Makes Season 3 Even More Significant To The MCU

Disney recently confirmed that Daredevil: Born Again is ending with its third season. Once again, a Daredevil series has been cancelled after three seasons, and once again, fans are deeply disappointed. Maybe, in another few years, Cox’s Daredevil will get three more seasons on some other streaming service, and we’ll repeat the process all over again.

The Mouse House has decided not to renew showrunner Dario Scardapane’s contract, so he’s been exited from the series in the middle of season 3’s post-production process. It all sounds very dubious — it certainly doesn’t sound like the ending was planned this way — but Born Again’s confirmed ending makes season 3 even more important to the MCU.

Between one Avengers movie this Christmas and another Avengers movie next Christmas, all we’ve got to look forward to is Daredevil: Born Again’s third and final season. I doubt that Daredevil: Born Again will have any major setups for the next Avengers movie, like Ant-Man 2 and Captain Marvel both did, but it still makes Matt Murdock the most important character on the MCU’s 2027 slate.
