Transfer news: Sundowns eye former Pirates defender after Mudau injury

Mamelodi Sundowns could reportedly turn to former Orlando Pirates defender Deano van Rooyen as they look to strengthen at right-back following Khuliso Mudau’s injury.

Van Rooyen spent two seasons with Pirates, winning four trophies during his time at the club. However, a lack of regular game time eventually saw the defender leave the Buccaneers.

The 28-year-old could now find himself on the radar of Sundowns, who have been dealt a blow with Mudau suffering a severe Achilles tendon injury. The Bafana Bafana international is expected to be sidelined for around six weeks.

Various reports have linked Van Rooyen with a move to Chloorkop, although Sundowns’ primary target appears to be Polokwane City right-back Thabang Matuludi.

Matuludi is reportedly keen on a move away from Polokwane City, but Rise and Shine are understood to have no intention of selling the Bafana Bafana defender to another local club.

Sundowns looking for a quality right-back

That could force Sundowns to explore alternative options, with Van Rooyen emerging as a potential solution.

The Brazilians currently sit second in the Betway Premiership after beating Magesi on Wednesday evening. They trail leaders and rivals Orlando Pirates only on goal difference.

With the transfer window set to close in a couple of weeks, Miguel Cardoso could still look to make further additions to his squad.

Sundowns are competing in more than six different competitions this season, making squad depth crucial if they are to challenge for multiple trophies.
