Furious' Teased Season 2 Twist Would Be A Death Sentence For The Series

Though it premiered in July, Furious, Hulu's latest hit, saw its biggest surge in viewership after its season 1 finale. The now-buzzy series offered an impressively raw observation of the aftermath of sexual trauma and physical abuse. Even as its plot grew increasingly twisty and exhilarating, Furious season 1 ultimately maintained a pervasive sense of emotional realism.

With a sympathetic killer and corrupt, immoral victims, Furious' sense of justice began eliciting complicated feelings in its viewers from the start. As the series went on, its distinction between heroes and villains grew increasingly more complex than merely criminals and law enforcement.

This messiness was a lifelike and important element of the show, as it captured the way right and wrong can be both very simple and not the way it seems at first glance. At the center of it all was Emmy Rossum's Alice, an FBI agent with a past that complicated her professional status, even as her morals remained more grounded than almost everyone around her.

However, Furious' season 2 renewal threatens to send Alice veering from compellingly complex to implausibly dark. If the show were ending with season 1, the final twist of its closing moments would make for a compelling ending, and Furious could definitively be considered an instant classic.

Actually bringing that twist to fruition, though, would almost certainly derail Alice's character and jeopardize the surprising quality of the show's first season.

Furious Season 2 Shouldn't Turn Emmy Rossum's Alice Into A Killer

To an extent, Furious season 1 already turned Alice into a killer. When she visited Catherine in prison, it came to light that Alice didn't simply witness Jay Easton's death. She caused it, and Alice's demeanor even went so far as to imply that she enjoyed it.

Yet given how completely irredeemable Jay Easton was, in addition to the fact that he was already on the verge of death, the one, in-the-moment decision is an understandable and exciting twist for Alice's character. What threatens to take that idea too far is what happened next.

In the closing moments of season 1, Alice was seen returning to the FBI, now working for Nora, who insisted that Alice watch the newly unearthed teenage sex tape of herself, to essentially look the horrors she's experienced in the eye and move through them. As Alice did this, she discovered the FBI's database had access to everyone who had downloaded the video, which proved to be over 50,000 people.

The scene implied that Alice is going to go on a similar crusade to Catherine, hunting everyone who has violated her. While Furious season 1 effectively conveyed the desire for control and revenge, this path is simply not in Alice's best interest.

As she closed in on Catherine, Alice was forced to confront many demons of her own, and the story saw her make great strides in working through her considerable trauma. With the support of Danny, Alice was eventually able to open up about what she's been through, confront her trauma response to showers, and even pursue a safe and healthy sexual relationship.

Falling into a cycle of violence and vengeance would involve Alice returning to more harmful coping mechanisms and steeping herself in one of the worst things that ever happened to her, rather than moving past it. She would also likely lose the positive things she brought into her life in Furious season 1, as her relationship with Danny almost certainly couldn't withstand that development.

There Are Plenty Of Other Ways Furious Season 2 Could Go

The final moments of the Furious season 1 finale could prove to be a misdirection, or even a moment of growth, if Alice has the thought of going down this dark path and instead lets the idea pass her by. However it plays out, watching Alice continue to heal and pursue true justice with her painfully earned understanding of who the real villains are would certainly be a more rewarding route for season 2 to take.

Though Emmy Rossum has voiced excitement for Furious' success and season 2 renewal, there actually haven't been any cast announcements made yet. The show could even take on an anthology format like True Detective with a completely new cast, criminals and investigators alike, in season 2.

Realistically, though, this is unlikely as Alice is such a compelling, emotionally rich character, and Emmy Rossum brings a degree of star power to the series. Giving her a new case with complex subjects that continue to press on her own triggers and sensitivities would be the most engaging and likely route for Furious to go in its sophomore season.
