With the New York Mets looking ahead to free agency and the offseason after a disappointing season in 2026, some loose threads from the year still needed to be untangled, such as the contract of star Bo Bichette. As rumors will surround the Mets and what the offseason could look like, a decision has been made by Bichette that determines his future with the ball club.

According to Will Sammon of The Athletic, Bichette is "exercising his $42 million player option" for the 2027 season, meaning he is staying with New York.

"Bo Bichette is exercising his $42 million player option for next season and staying with the New York Mets, league sources tell The Athletic," Sammon wrote on X, formerly Twitter. "Bichette, 28, holds another player option worth the same amount for 2028."

After spending the first seven seasons of his MLB career with the Toronto Blue Jays, he went to the Mets for the 2026 season and had a brutal start. Bouncing back to close out the season with a .260 batting average, 18 home runs, and 78 RBIs, he looks to improve in 2027, which could be strategic as he has another player option for the 2028 season.

"Bichette, who rebounded after a miserable start in his first year in New York, holds another player option for 2028 worth another $42 million," Sammon wrote for The Athletic. "His decision to stick around with the Mets makes sense for a few reasons. He could test the market again next offseason without an impending lockout looming over the sport's landscape. By then, he could be coming off better production, too."

At any rate, Bichette looks to help the Mets after finishing with a 74-88 record, last in the NL East.
