Police seek mother of abandoned Abuja newborn

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has appealed to residents of Bwari Area Council to help locate the mother of a baby boy who was allegedly abandoned in the area.

The baby, who was found in a badly injured condition, was reportedly wrapped in a nylon bag and had bruises on one of his hands.

The state Police Public Relations Officer of the FCT Command, Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a short video posted on X on Wednesday, saying the police had taken the baby to the hospital for medical attention.

“We picked this child yesterday in Bwari Area Council, and we have been managing the baby since morning because he was not in a good condition. We found him in a very bad state. He is a baby boy,” Adeh said.

She appealed to residents, particularly those in Bwari, to provide information that could help the police identify and locate the baby’s mother.

“As usual, we are calling on residents living around Bwari Area Council to help us locate the mother of this baby. The baby boy was abandoned, wrapped in a nylon bag, and was badly injured. He sustained some bruises on his hand,” she said.

Adeh said the baby had been taken to the hospital and would be returned for further medical attention before being handed over to the social welfare authorities.

“We are trying to manage the situation. We just brought him back from the hospital. We will be taking him back, and we will hand him over to social welfare,” she added.

She urged anyone who had information about a woman who had recently been pregnant but was no longer seen with the pregnancy to contact the Bwari Police Station.

“Please, residents of the FCT, most especially Bwari Area Council, if you notice any young lady who had been pregnant but is no longer seen with the pregnancy, please reach out to the Bwari Police Station with details that can help us locate the mother,” Adeh said.

The police spokesperson also appealed to women who were unable or unwilling to care for their babies to seek assistance from social welfare offices or police stations rather than abandon their children.

“To you young ladies out there, I am begging you, please, if you don’t want the baby, you can walk into a social welfare office or the nearest police station, and we will assist you. Instead of abandoning these children, come to us; we will help you. Many parents want these children,” she said.
