Sons of Anarchy franchise creator Kurt Sutter speaks out on the show's upcoming meta thriller.

It was recently announced that Charlie Hunnam would return to the world of Sons of Anarchy, after more than a decade, for an intriguing new drama. The Emmy-nominated actor is set to star in an FX series called Legends, which will see several SoA actors reuniting on-screen to play fictionalized versions of themselves.

Sutter has shared his thoughts about Legends in an Instagram Stories video. Sutter clarifies that he is not involved with the series, noting that Legends isn't about the Sons of Anarchy characters or its mythology. Instead, it is about the legacy that the 7-season crime drama has left. In his comments, which are transcribed below, Sutter talks about how he gives Legacy his blessing and teases that it will be quite impressive:

I know the news about Charlie’s show hit today, and I’m beginning to get some queries about it. I just want to say my piece. I’m not involved with Legends at all — nor should I be. It has nothing to do with the characters I created, or the mythology. It’s really about the show and the legacy of the show, and, quite frankly, there are thousands of people who are responsible for that legacy. I just want folks to know that Charlie came to me when he was in the process of pitching this to the network to ask for my blessing, knowing that the IP would probably not be able to be invoked for various reasons of legalese stuff. I gave Charlie my full blessing. I wish nothing but the best for him in this project. My wife [star Katey Sagal] is in the project. I have nothing but love for [FX Networks chairman] John Landgraf and the folks at FX who have been so good to me, so generous. So it has my full-blown support. Watch this motherf—-er, because I’ve taken a peek at the script that was perhaps just lying on my wife’s knitting table, and it’s really so well done. I think you’ll dig it. I love Charlie to death, and I think you will have mad love for this project as well.

Just as Sutter mentions, Katey Sagal (who played Gemma) is part of the Legends cast alongside Hunnam, who portrayed the lead character of Jax Teller. They'll be joined by Ron Perlman, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi, with more casting to be announced at a later date.

They'll share the screen for Legends, which begins when the Sons of Anarchy cast gets back together after more than a decade. Soon, the line between real life and art blurs, leading to a “fractured brotherhood” that brushes up against a real threat more dangerous than anything the actors faced on the show.

The idea was developed by Hunnam and writer Jonathan Groff (Happy Endings, Late Night with Conan O'Brien). The duo are set to executive produce alongside Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel, and Jackie Cohn. A specific release date and more casting details are not yet known.

Sutter, who had a recurring role on Sons of Anarchy, was fired from the spinoff Mayans M.C. seven years ago during what was a very public spat. That adds some history to his current comments. But on the whole, he seems very positive about this meta chapter in the SAMCRO saga.

It brings to mind the Seinfeld reunion on Curb Your Enthusiasm or perhaps that summer show, where the cast of Beverly Hills, 90210 reunited to poke fun at old feuds and offer a bit of nostalgia for the early 1990s crowd. Legends sounds like something different, even if it's not quite a Sons of Anarchy sequel.
