Aaron Boone will return for his 10th season as manager of the New York Yankees in 2027, a source confirmed to ESPN on Monday, more than a week after the club was eliminated in the American League Division Series for the second straight year.

Boone's contract runs through next season, the final season of a two-year, $10.5 million extension he signed in February 2025. The Yankees hired Boone out of the ESPN broadcast booth to replace Joe Girardi in December 2017.

His tenure has been an unsatisfying mix of consistent regular-season success and constant postseason failure. Boone's .583 winning percentage is tied for 17th in major league history. The Yankees have reached the playoffs in eight of his nine campaigns. They have not finished worse than two games over .500, extending the Yankees' MLB-record streak of 34 consecutive winning seasons.

But the Yankees have not won a World Series since Girardi led them to the 2009 title. The 17-season drought is the second longest in franchise history. They've gone 13 straight playoff appearances without a World Series title, tied for the fourth-longest streak in MLB postseason history.

The Yankees have reached the World Series once under Boone, losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games in 2024. They've advanced to the ALCS twice, losing to the Houston Astros in 2019 and 2022. They've lost to AL East rivals who beat them out for the division title -- the Toronto Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays -- and watched them celebrate at Yankee Stadium the past two seasons.

This season, two years after a three-error inning in Game 5 of the World Series haunted them, sloppiness cost the Yankees again when they committed three errors in the first inning of Game 2 of the ALDS against the Rays. The Yankees lost that night. Two days later, Tampa Bay completed a sweep in Game 3 in New York.

"You go through a lot as a group and then it's just a sudden end," Boone said after Game 3. "It's the worst fricking feeling in the world. You know, again, offering that perspective with all due respect. And I have that perspective of we are playing a game. I understand that. But it doesn't lessen the pain of the ending, you know, and hopefully that's something that again continues to fuel guys that are going through this for the first time and then those of us that have been through it a lot."
