Thembisa woman, 23, shot dead on her way to work

A 23-year-old woman was shot dead while walking to work in Thembisa on Monday morning, with police treating robbery as the suspected motive.

The shooting happened in Mapungubwe Street, Temong, at about 05:45 on 28 September.

The attacker took the woman’s belongings before fleeing. Police have opened murder and robbery cases.

Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said officers were following up on leads.

“The woman was reportedly on her way to work when she was shot and killed during an alleged robbery. Her belongings were taken during the incident,” Muridili said.

Police have identified the woman but have not released her name because her family still needs to be formally notified.

No arrests after Thembisa shooting

Police had not arrested anyone by Monday morning.

Investigators are treating the case as a murder and robbery and have appealed to anyone with information to come forward.

Muridili said preliminary investigations had not established any link between Monday’s shooting and the recent deaths of women across Ekurhuleni.

The distinction is important as police continue investigating several cases involving women found dead across the metro.

Killing follows Mooifontein Cemetery murder

The shooting happened two days after residents found Ntombifuthi Nxumalo dead at Mooifontein Cemetery in Thembisa.

Nxumalo had suffered serious head injuries, while stones lay around her body. Police said the scene raised the possibility that she had been stoned.

Detectives traced a suspect from Thembisa to Limpopo and arrested him in Mohlabaneng village near Tzaneen at about 23:00 on Saturday.

Police have not linked that suspect to the other killings under investigation in Ekurhuleni.

Ekurhuleni investigations continue

Police continue tracing suspects and following leads in the wider investigation into the deaths of women across Ekurhuleni.

Authorities have warned against assuming that all the cases involve the same perpetrator, particularly where the circumstances differ.

In Monday’s Thembisa shooting, police say the available information points to an alleged robbery.
