One of the original actors of The Walking Dead wants to adapt one specific Resident Evil game with Zach Cregger.
Chandler Riggs, who portrayed Rick Grimes' son, Carl Grimes, in the original Walking Dead series, is hoping to become part of another major horror franchise. And he is officially taking matters into his own hands with a fan-made adaptation. Following the announcement of his Resident Evil movie, the actor revealed that he was very interested in collaborating with director Zach Cregger on a future Resident Evil sequel.
Riggs is preparing to release a 20-minute short film inspired by Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, the critically acclaimed 2017 survival horror game developed by Capcom. The project recreates the anxiety-inducing garage confrontation between Ethan Winters and Jack Baker, with Riggs taking on the role of Ethan.
In an exclusive interview with IGN, Riggs discussed his passion for the video game franchise and the challenges of adapting its content. He also expressed his enthusiasm about potentially working with Cregger if the director and writer ever decides to change his mind and explore the Resident Evil universe again.
The actor explained that his short film was already in pre-production when news emerged about Cregger's adaptation. Although his team had initially hoped to debut the project before the feature-length theatrical release arrived, scheduling conflicts prevented that from happening.
We were in pre-production when the article came out that Zack Cregger was going to do his [movie]. I was like, ‘Oh man, all right, we got to get ours out first.’ We were trying to beat the clock and get it out about a month ago, but parts just didn't align that way.
I've been looking forward to [Cregger’s RE movie] for so long. And I mean, one of the big reasons I even made this is, you know, I was just dying to see a good, true-to-the-game live-action adaptation of Resident Evil.
However, despite the overlap, Riggs praised Cregger's approach to the franchise. He also acknowledged the challenges of adapting such a beloved property while meeting Resident Evil fans' expectations and believed the director did a great job.
Look, it's impossible to please everybody, you know? I think there's always going to be a crowd that is unhappy, but I think that it's a great way to try to get more people into the series, into the franchise, and tell a story that you want to tell. It is not an easy thing; doing a Resident Evil film with Leon and Jill and everyone, that’s a tall order, you know what I mean? Those characters are so iconic from the games, and it's not an uneasy thing to do. So I totally respect going your own direction and doing your own thing.
The actor also expressed interest in eventually developing a feature-length adaptation of Resident Evil 7. This implies that his upcoming short could be just the beginning of a larger plan he has for the franchise. However, a collaboration between Riggs and Cregger remains hypothetical. Neither has confirmed any plans to work together, and there is no sequel in the works involving the two.
Released in 2017, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is a survival horror game developed and published by Capcom. The seventh main installment in the Resident Evil series follows Ethan as he travels to an isolated plantation in Louisiana in search of his missing wife, Mia. There, he encounters the Baker family, whose mysterious infection has transformed them into dangerous monsters.
Unlike the action-driven Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6, the game returned to the franchise's survival horror roots, focusing more on exploring the locations, limited resources, and horrifying tension. It also introduced a first-person perspective to the main Resident Evil series, bringing players closer to the terrifying events unfolding around Ethan.
