Four killed, one injured in Ogun crash

Four persons were killed and another injured in a fatal road crash that occurred early Wednesday on the Ibadan-Lagos route at Straight Gate, Ogun State.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command, confirmed that the crash occurred at about 4 a.m. on Wednesday.

According to a statement signed by Chief Route Commander Afolabi Odunsi, Public Relations Officer, FRSC Ogun State Sector Command,

Eight persons were involved in the accident, with four male adults confirmed dead, one male adult injured and three others escaping unhurt.

Two vehicles were involved in the crash: a blue Mitsubishi Cabstar, with registration number FGE 753 XA, and an ash-coloured HOWO truck, with registration number T-695 KT.

According to the FRSC, preliminary investigation indicated that speed violation and wrong overtaking were responsible for the crash.

The Corps said the Mitsubishi driver, who was allegedly travelling at high speed, rammed into the moving truck while attempting to overtake.

It added that fatigue was also identified as a contributing factor, as the driver was reportedly fatigued during the journey.

The FRSC said its rescue team received the distress report at 4:33 a.m. and arrived at the scene at 4:39 a.m., recording a six-minute response time.

The injured victim was rescued and taken to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the FOS Mortuary, Ipara.

The crashed vehicles were subsequently handed over to the Police Motor Traffic Division, MTD, Isara Division, for further investigation and necessary action.

Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists to avoid speeding, fatigue and unsafe overtaking, particularly during early-morning journeys.

Ogunjobi advised drivers embarking on long-distance trips to get adequate rest before setting out and to overtake only when it was safe and permissible.

The Sector Commander said, “Motorists must avoid speeding, fatigue and unsafe overtaking, especially during early-morning journeys. Drivers are advised to take adequate rest before embarking on long-distance trips and to overtake only when it is safe and permissible to do so.”

He further urged motorists to prioritise safety on the roads, stressing the importance of responsible driving.

The FRSC reiterated its safety message to motorists: “Drive with care. Better to be late than never.”
