Volkswagen Group (VWAGY) and NXP Semiconductors (NXPI) have agreed to a strategic partnership to support the automaker’s future software-defined vehicle (SDV) architecture.

NXP’s S32K5 family of microcontrollers will serve as a key building block for zonal control systems across Volkswagen Group brands and vehicle segments. The first vehicle featuring the new architecture is planned for 2027.

The S32K5 microcontrollers enable functions that previously required separate chips and ECUs to be consolidated within zonal controllers, reducing hardware complexity. They will serve as a common building block for the future zonal software-defined vehicle architecture being developed by Rivian Automotive (RIVN) and Volkswagen Group Technologies (RV Tech), their joint venture.
