‘Running Point’ Co-Creator Mindy Kaling Takes On-Screen Role in Season 3

Translate

Running Point co-creator and executive producer Mindy Kaling is stepping in front of the camera for the show’s third season.

Kaling will have a recurring part in the Netflix comedy, which is currently filming season three. The Running Point role will be Kaling’s first on-camera acting work since 2023, when she made her last appearance as Audra on Apple TV’s The Morning Show (she has done some voice work since then).

Kaling will play Divya, the outspoken CEO of a popular gambling app. Like Kate Hudson’s Isla Gordon, she is “proudly he first female leader in her male dominated field,” per the character description. That does not, however, mean that Divya and Isla will get along.

Hudson will also make her TV directing debut in season three, helming the first episode.

Running Point is loosely based on Los Angeles Lakers acting governor Jeanie Buss (who’s an executive producer) and centers on Hudson’s character, who takes the reins of the professional basketball team her family owns. The season three cast also includes Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Brenda Song, Fabrizio Guido, Chet Hanks, Toby Sandeman and Justin Theroux. Ray Romano, Uche Agada, Ken Marino and Jay Ellis have recurring roles.

Warner Bros. Television, where Kaling and Running Point showrunner David Stassen have overall deals, produces the series. Kaling, Stassen and Ike Barinholtz are writers and executive producers; Hudson, Howard Klein, Buss and Linda Rambis also exec produce.
