Spanish police have launched an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter following the death of Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel, who suffered cardiac arrest after an on-field collision during a second-division match against Andorra on Monday.
The 30-year-old footballer died in hospital on Tuesday morning, his club confirmed. Spain’s National Police said an investigation had been opened, with prosecutors also set to be involved.
The incident occurred during stoppage time when Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono rushed out of his penalty area towards midfield to challenge De Miguel for a long ball.

Owono collided with the Tenerife forward, striking him in the chest. The goalkeeper was shown a straight red card.
De Miguel initially remained on his knees, holding his torso, before collapsing onto the pitch. Players from both teams immediately called for medical assistance.
The forward suffered cardiac arrest and was taken to hospital. Tenerife later confirmed that his pulse had been restored during the ambulance journey, but his neurological condition subsequently deteriorated.
The match, which was level at 2-2 when the incident occurred, was abandoned.
Police are now examining the circumstances surrounding the collision. Spanish judicial authorities have explained that an investigation is automatically opened in cases involving non-natural deaths. The proceedings do not establish criminal responsibility.
🖤 Spanish football mourns the loss of Jesús de Miguel. Deeply saddened by today's news, the RFEF extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and loved ones, as well as to @CDTOficial and all their fans. We stand with you in this time of profound grief. Rest in peace. 🕊️

Tenerife, based in Spain’s Canary Islands, expressed its grief following the player’s death and offered support to his family.
Fatal injuries resulting from collisions are rare in football. In September 2025, Spanish goalkeeper Raúl Ramírez, 19, died after suffering head injuries during a fifth-division match.
