Caterina’s Cucina e Bar
This venue is included in Good Food’s 100 Essential Restaurants list.
Nebbiolo is flowing and conversation swirls around deals, golf and school fees. It’s past 3pm on a regular Wednesday and Caterina’s antique-filled, timber-beamed dining room is still humming. And why not?
The (mostly male) diners have been warmly welcomed by owner Caterina Borsato, shown to a linen-clothed table with bread rolls awaiting, and enjoyed the generosity that underpins Italian cooking. A novel take on tricolore unites golden pan-seared scallops, peas done two ways and a scatter of ruby-red pomegranate seeds.
Parcels of duck leg tortelli bask among dabs of creamy squacquerone cheese and a scattering of sweet potato crisps. Tender baby goat stew – a menu mainstay – rests on soft golden polenta that catches every drop of cinnamon-scented jus. Back to the office? No. Cancel that afternoon meeting and book a session with vin santo (from the 600-plus bottle wine list) and light-as-air cheesecake.
Best for: Old-school power lunches with old-school hospitality.
