Forestry Minister affirms forest fire mitigations readiness

Surakarta, Jawa Tengah (ANTARA) - Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni confirmed the readiness of forest and land fire mitigation measures across national conservation areas.

"Fighting to extinguish fires is important, but equally important is protecting our wildlife, an extraordinary asset that we must safeguard together," Antoni said in a statement on Monday.

Active mitigation is carried out through the Forest and Land Fire Monitoring System (SiPongi), fire monitoring posts, and joint inter-agency teams.

Field operations are supported by slip-on firefighting vehicles alongside weather modification operations (OMC) and helicopter water-bombing missions.

"Handling forest and land fires in conservation areas does not rely on a single method; instead, it involves ground-based firefighting, water-bombing support, and weather modification operations," Antoni stated.

"Strengthening the protection of conservation areas is crucial because these regions harbor biodiversity that must be preserved," he added.

One conservation zone receiving government attention is Way Kambas National Park (TNWK) in Lampung.

During a recent visit by Norwegian Ambassador to Indonesia Kaja Glomm, Antoni noted that Way Kambas National Park is transitioning into a Public Service Agency (BLU) to strengthen park governance and financing.

"This process is part of the effort to develop national park management schemes through the National Park Financing Task Force," he said.

Regarding personnel readiness, Way Kambas National Park is supported by 17 members of the Manggala Agni brigade and 44 forest rangers.

Standby equipment includes seven four-wheeled vehicles, 33 two- and three-wheeled vehicles, eight pump sets with accessories, 60 jet-shooter extinguishers, and two tents.

"Inspecting the facilities and equipment alongside the Norwegian Ambassador is part of the effort to ensure readiness for mitigation and the protection of conservation areas against the threat of forest and land fires," the minister said.
