Star Trek: The Original Series changed science fiction television forever when it premiered in 1966, introducing audiences to Captain James T. Kirk, Spock, Dr. McCoy, and the crew of the USS Enterprise. What began as a three-season television series grew into one of entertainment’s most influential franchises, helping popularize a more optimistic vision of humanity's future while using science fiction to explore complex social, ethical, and philosophical questions.

Now, 60 years later, the impact of The Original Series can be seen everywhere, from modern television and movies to real-world technology that once seemed impossibly futuristic. Kirk and his crew have also remained an essential part of Star Trek itself, with their original five-year mission continuing to inspire countless new adventures decades after the show ended.

The 60th anniversary is bringing another such adventure this month, with Star Trek: The Original Series — Echoes in Eternity arriving on October 27 and taking fans on a decades-spanning adventure through time and space.

Spock and Kirk in Star Trek - The Original Series

Star Trek: The Original Series is getting a substantial new adventure for its 60th anniversary with Echoes in Eternity, a brand-new novel from veteran Star Trek author David Mack. Scheduled for release on October 27, 2026, the 368-page book is designed to celebrate the franchise by telling the kind of sprawling cosmic story that would have been difficult to realize on screen in the original television series.

The story revolves around three seemingly separate lives unfolding across decades. One follows a child growing up without the mother she lost, another centers on someone born into privilege who is seeking redemption after falling from grace, while the third concerns a young Starfleet officer receiving a first command. What initially appear to be independent journeys eventually become connected through the mysterious planet KX-1 and whatever secret has arrived there from beyond the stars.

KX-1 presents a unique problem even by Star Trek standards. Situated between two black holes, the barren world can only be reached during limited windows created by its unusual orbit and the extreme gravitational forces surrounding it. Discovering what happened there consequently requires three separate missions spread across 27 years, allowing Echoes in Eternity to examine its central mystery across different stages of its characters' lives. The publisher also teases growing tensions and mistrust between the three central figures, suggesting their personal conflicts will become just as important as solving KX-1's larger cosmic puzzle.

Mack is particularly well suited to revisit The Original Series era, as he helped develop the acclaimed Star Trek: Vanguard saga, which expanded the world surrounding Kirk's Enterprise during the 23rd century, and wrote several of its major installments, beginning with Harbinger and later including Reap the Whirlwind, Precipice, and finale Storming Heaven.

He returned to that corner of the franchise with 2022's Harm's Way, another Original Series novel involving Kirk, the Klingons, and Operation Vanguard. Booklist praised that novel as an entertaining, fast-moving adventure for TOS fans.

His credentials extend well beyond those stories as well. Mack is a New York Times bestselling author whose career now encompasses 40 novels, with three books reaching the New York Times bestseller list and 28 appearances on Locus' media-related fiction bestseller list. His Cold Equations trilogy also produced multiple New York Times bestsellers.

In 2022, the International Association of Media Tie-In Writers named Mack a Grandmaster and presented him with its Faust Award, while his Trek work has earned multiple Scribe Awards. He has even contributed directly to televised Star Trek, including writing credits on Deep Space Nine and consulting work for Lower Decks and Prodigy.

Echoes in Eternity releases October 27 in hardcover and ebook, with an unabridged audiobook narrated by Robert Petkoff arriving the same day.
