The last decade has honestly felt like one long parade of reboots, with not even Hellboy escaping the trend. While we all love seeing our favorite franchises continue, it’s understandable to be wary, especially when those franchises have already delivered their peak content, and so many successors and comebacks have fallen short of expectations. However, Hellboy isn’t making another ill-fated comeback. Instead, the iconic character is returning to one of the greatest eras of his history with a new two-part mini-series that officially launched today.
Ron Perlman’s legendary portrayal of the red devil himself is, without question, the best live-action portrayal of Hellboy to date, with many fans still begging Guillermo del Toro to return for a third movie. Unfortunately, that fan wish never came true and likely never will. However, true die-hard fans know that the OG Hellboy came well before Perlman’s portrayal, with the character first making his debut in the comics.
Hellboy steps in to save a young woman being chased by winged beasts deep in Hell in the midst of an uprising against the most powerful demons. But nothing — and no one — are what they seem to be.
Now, Hellboy has not only returned to comics with the official launch of the first issue of a new two-part miniseries, but he is also returning with creator Mike Mignola at the helm to one of the most beloved eras in the character’s bibliography. Fans have known this return was coming for months, but Hellboy in Hell: Nothing But Blood is finally here.
Everything You Need To Know About Hellboy’s Golden Era Return (& Best Order To Binge)
Main Cover by Cyrille Pomès for Hellboy in Hell: Nothing But Blood #1 (2026)
If the title Hellboy in Hell sounds familiar, it should. Mike Mignola’s Hellboy in Hell launched in 2012 as a 10-issue series and concluded in 2016. The series is often regarded as one of the most important story arcs in the entire franchise, as it explored Hellboy’s time in Hell, revealed key truths about his origins, and served as a major expansion of the Hellboy mythos. Now, Hellboy in Hell: Nothing But Blood is returning Hellboy to this golden era.
In terms of continuity, this two-part comic event does NOT take place after Mignola’s original Hellboy in Hell. Instead, the story takes place immediately after issue #8, which depicted Satan’s death and the fall of Pandemonium. While fans can jump straight into Hellboy in Hell: Nothing But Blood, we suggest reading Hellboy in Hell first for the best experience. If you want to read the story in chronological order, start with Hellboy in Hell #1-8, then read the two-part Hellboy in Hell: Nothing But Blood, before wrapping up with the final two issues of the original series.
Readers should also note that while Nothing But Blood #1 was released today, October 7, 2026, issue #2 has yet to hit comic shelves. Hellboy in Hell: Nothing But Blood #2 is slated for November 18, 2026, meaning binge readers still have a little over a month to wait before they can experience this new chapter in Hellboy’s legacy in one go.
