Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn Officially Returns This Month

In the eternal avalanche of Brandon Sanderson books, Mistborn remains special. While the scope of the story isn't as enormous as The Stormlight Archive and the prose isn't as flavorful as Tress of the Emerald Sea, Vin's journey and all the reveals that happen along the way are electrifying in a way that's hard to replicate.
It's consequently no surprise that Mistborn still looms large in his overall library of works, and its presence doesn't seem to be going away any time soon. The third era of books still isn't on the immediate horizon, but fans are being treated with a different comeback in the meantime.
Mistborn: The Well of Ascension is slated to release on November 18, 2026, and no, that isn't just the second book in the original Mistborn trilogy. This time, the title belongs to an expansion for Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game, a stand-alone deckbuilding game that mercifully avoids the money-devouring card-collecting aspects of games like Magic: The Gathering and the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
Instead, cards are "purchased" within the scope of the game itself, with no booster packs to complicate matters. The Well of Ascension is the first add-on to the game, acting as a traditional expansion that introduces new cards and mechanics. As you'd expect from the name, it also incorporates elements from the second book's story, moving into the trickier territory of all the bad things that can happen even after a tyrant is deposed.
Fascinatingly, this isn't even the first time that a Mistborn board game has expanded to cover ideas from the second book. In 2021, the resource-management game Mistborn: House War received The Siege of Luthadel as an expansion, covering the climactic political challenge from The Well of Ascension. The real question is whether Mistborn: The Deckbuilding game will eventually work its way to the third book. While Mistborn: House War never ended up covering The Hero of Ages, The Deckbuilding Game seems to have more momentum behind it.
More broadly, Mistborn: The Well of Ascension's publisher, Brotherwise Games, has been increasingly committed to Sanderson's work in recent years. Both The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn received TTRPG adaptations as part of The Cosmere RPG, giving fans of games like Dungeons & Dragons a way to play out their own stories in Sanderson's famously complex worlds. Still, for those who don't want to commit to a roleplaying experience (and potentially months or years of game nights), Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game remains an easier title to break out for any randomoccasion.
I can certainly appreciate a deckbuilding game that isn't designed to drain your wallet dry, and to that end, The Well of Ascension expansion retails for an entirely reasonable $24.99. Hopefully, it'll end up being a strong expansion to The Deckbuilding Game's compelling foundation and an adaptation that can live up to its memorable namesake. Either way, I'm sure Mistborn fans will manage to get their fun out of it while they wait for Era Three to arrive.
