Andrew Garfield Hit With Historic Box Office Drop For The Fourth Time In Five Years

The Uprising is failing to conquer the box office during its sophomore weekend.

The new historical action movie, which was written and directed by Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy, Captain Phillips), stars Andrew Garfield as an unnamed ploughman who becomes an important figure in England's 1381 Peasants' Revolt (while the revolt is a true historical event, his depiction pulls elements from Robin Hood stories in addition to historical details). The Uprising debuted in North America on September 10 with $3.3 million, which marked the second-lowest wide release domestic debut in history for an Andrew Garfield movie (just three weeks after The Magic Faraway Tree earned his lowest).

The supporting cast of The Uprising includes Cosmo Jarvis, Jamie Bell, Tom Hollander, Katherine Waterston, Thomasin McKenzie, and Jonny Lee Miller.

Per Box Office Mojo, The Uprising has followed its disappointing debut with a 3-day gross of $1.2 million during its sophomore weekend at the domestic box office. In addition to seeing it falling from No. 8 to No. 13 on the domestic chart, this total means that the movie dropped 63.8% from its opening weekend. This officially marks Andrew Garfield's fourth-worst sophomore drop of all time.

The star has typically set a standard of having movies with slim drops. Some haven't even dropped at all. Because he has starred in many buzzy movies that opened in limited release before expanding wide, five of his 18 movies that played in domestic theaters for two weekends or more actually earned more during their sophomore weekends than they did during their debuts. Additionally, three had drops between 0% and 29% and four had drops between 30% and 49%.

Of the five movies of his that had drops higher than 60%, the four biggest all debuted between 2021 and 2026, with the worst being the Gia Coppola dramedy Mainstream (-83.1%), which co-starred Maya Hawke, Nat Wolff, Alexa Demie, and Johnny Knoxville and earned a negative Rotten Tomatoes score of 42%. As this chart reveals, having a substantial sophomore drop does not necessarily mean that a film will be a flop. Andrew Garfield's third-worst drop belongs to Spider-Man: No Way Home, which became the highest-grossing solo superhero movie at the time (it has since been surpassed by its own sequel, Spider-Man: Brand New Day) and is currently the ninth highest-grossing movie of all time.

However, 2026's The Uprising had a significantly lower debut than No Way Home, so its drop, while smaller, could potentially be more damaging. While the new release also has a significantly smaller budget (No Way Home reportedly cost $200 million, and the reported price tag of Uprising is only $20 million), this could still potentially place its estimated break-even point as high as $50 million, which is a total that it seems likely to fail to hit, considering the fact that it has only earned $6.5 million and is already slowing down significantly.

The Uprising is continuing a negative trend both for the Andrew Garfield movies of the 2020s overall and for his 2026 output in particular. However, he has a chance to set his box office prospects back on course with his next movie, Luca Guadagnino's Artificial, which debuts on December 25. If that movie harnesses the holiday season's tendency to foster sleeper hits, he could break his trend of posting record-setting sophomore drops.
