Sidney Crosby Takes Unexpected Hit From NHL Linesman In Bizarre Pittsburgh Penguins Moment

Sidney Crosby had one of the more unusual moments of his storied career on Saturday night when linesman Travis Gawryletz inadvertently extended his arms and caught the Penguins captain square in the face. It happened early in the first period against the Nashville Predators at PPG Paints Arena. Flemington was signalling the play onside when his arm swung out and clotheslined Crosby, sending him to the ice. Crosby was not seriously hurt, though he briefly stepped aside from a faceoff. Pittsburgh ultimately won the game 3-2 in overtime.

When the Linesman Becomes the Highlight

Crosby was approaching the offensive zone when the linesman went to signal the play onside, waved his arm, and knocked him down. Pure accident, wrong place, wrong time. Crosby was simply gliding toward Flemington, and his path would have taken him safely past the official had Flemington not thrown his arms out to the side at that exact moment. The arm caught Crosby right across the face.

What made it stranger was the reaction, or the lack of one. Crosby didn't seem to blame the linesman at all. After a brief exchange on the ice, he skated back to the Penguins bench to tend to his face. No drama, no lingering, just a quiet acknowledgement that sometimes the game does weird things to you. The moment quickly spread online and became something of an internet spectacle, drawing debate over whether Crosby's tumble was pure reflex or genuine impact. Either way, it was the kind of clip that does not need context to land.

Crosby Still Delivered When It Mattered

Any concern about the incident was short-lived. Despite a frustratingly quiet game at even strength, Crosby came through when Pittsburgh needed him most. Cycling the puck in the offensive zone during a six-on-five situation, he threaded a pass through several sticks to Rickard Rakell, who one-timed it home to tie the game with a minute and six seconds left in regulation.

That assist was more than just a clutch play. It was Crosby's 1,111th career assist, tying Ray Bourque's NHL record for most assists with a single franchise. A record-setting pass and a collision with a linesman, all in the same game. Ville Koivunen then scored in overtime to complete Pittsburgh's comeback and push the Penguins' record to 5-6-1.

The first line as a whole is still not clicking consistently, and Crosby has not had a shot on goal in back-to-back games. But he found a way to matter when the clock was winding down. That part, at least, has not changed.
