Wales pick two father-son duos for Wheelchair World Cup squad

Wales have named two pairs of fathers and sons - Martin and Matthew Turner and Gareth and Sid Ramsey - in their squad for the Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup in Australia.

It is the first time a father and son have represented Wales together at a Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup and the first time two such pairings have been named in one squad.

A father-and-son pair have featured in the Wales set-up previously, but never before on the World Cup stage.

Head coach Alan Caron included them in his 12-strong selection for the tournament, which starts for Wales against England on Friday, 30 October in Wollongong.

Group games against Ireland and the United States follow at the same venue as the teams aim for the knockout stages.

Gareth Ramsey, John Berriman and Fionn McCabe - who turns 16 shortly before the competition - could make Wales debuts during the event.

Caron said: "Having two father-and-son combinations in the squad makes this World Cup particularly special.

"Gareth and Sid, and Martin and Matthew, have the opportunity to share something that very few players ever get to experience: representing Wales together at a World Cup.

"For John, Fionn and Gareth, the opportunity to make their Wales debuts at a World Cup would be something very special, while our experienced players will be vital in helping them and the rest of the squad through the tournament."

Wales have had to fundraise to help with the costs of taking the squad to Australia, with more than half of the £10,000 target donated so far.
