Why everyone is talking about Emile Witbooi

Emile Witbooi, the 18 year old Cape Town City attacker played an important role as South Africa successfully defended their regional crown in Mozambique. Amajita grabbed five wins from five matches.

Amajita beat Mozambique 2-1 in the final to lift the trophy for a second successive year.

Witbooi had already attracted plenty of attention before the tournament. However his performances in Mozambique have added another layer to the growing excitement around his career.

EMILE WITBOOI PRODUCES ANOTHER SPECIAL MOMENT FOR AMAJITA

One of the standout moments came in the 4-2 semi-final victory over Zambia. Witbooi collected the ball, drove at the Zambian defence and dribbled past three defenders before calmly finishing past the goalkeeper. The goal sealed South Africa’s fourth goal and sent Amajita into the final.

His performances also helped underline why he is already being closely monitored despite his young age.

Witbooi has experience beyond youth football and has featured for Cape Town City at senior level. His development has also been accelerated by regular involvement in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. He is a starting 11 player against older and more physical players.

His arrival at the COSAFA Cup camp was delayed because he had been on club duty with Cape Town City. Head coach Raymond Mdaka confirmed that an agreement had been reached with the club.

The teenager is therefore developing in two demanding environments, senior club football and international youth football.

CHELSEA, EUROPE AND ORLANDO PIRATES INTEREST

Witbooi’s rise has naturally attracted attention from clubs outside South Africa.

The attacking midfielder previously spent time on assessment at Chelsea. His representatives confirmed that the English giants had taken an interest in his ability. ESPN reported that a move to Europe remains a major objective for the player, although European transfer regulations previously meant his age was an important factor.

There has also been interest from Orlando Pirates.

Reports earlier this year suggested that Orlando Pirates explored the possibility of signing Witbooi, although Cape Town City chairman John Comitis later dismissed suggestions that formal negotiations had taken place.

Other reports indicated that Cape Town City valued the youngster at around €1 million, which was reported to have cooled Pirates’ interest.

More recently, Witbooi has also been linked with opportunities in Europe, including reports of interest from Bayern Munich. For now, Cape Town City remain in control of his situation.

Witbooi’s COSAFA campaign has added another impressive chapter to his development, but his next challenge will be continuing that progress at senior club level.

With Amajita now qualified for the 2027 Under 20 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana, there will be another major international stage for the youngster to showcase his talent.
