BMKG says South Sandwich Islands' quake poses no tsunami risk to RI

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said a magnitude 6.2 tectonic earthquake in the South Sandwich Islands region posed no tsunami risk to Indonesia.

BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Director Wijayanto said the assessment was based on tsunami-monitoring models run after the earthquake struck at 6:46 a.m. local time on Thursday.

“The tsunami modeling results show that this earthquake poses no tsunami risk to Indonesia,” he said.

Wijayanto said BMKG’s updated parameters put the earthquake at magnitude 6.2, with a depth of 119 kilometers.

The epicenter was offshore at 56.12 degrees south latitude and 27.85 degrees west longitude, about 2,008 kilometers southeast of Stanley in the Falkland Islands.

Based on the epicenter and hypocenter depth, the earthquake was classified as an intermediate-depth quake triggered by the subduction of the South American Plate beneath the Sandwich Plate. Source analysis indicated thrust-fault movement.

“Following the earthquake in the South Pacific Ocean, BMKG urges Indonesians, particularly coastal residents, to remain calm and avoid unverified information,” he said.

Wijayanto also urged the public to verify all official information about the earthquake and tsunami through BMKG’s verified communication channels and social media accounts.
