Indonesia seeks support for ICAO Council bid

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi is rallying support from member states of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council for Indonesia’s candidacy to the council for the 2026–2028 term.
"Becoming an ICAO Council member offers a valuable opportunity to serve, contribute, and collaborate more closely with the international community in shaping a global civil aviation sector that is safe, resilient, sustainable, and inclusive for all nations," he said here on Thursday.
The minister has previously put forward Indonesia's candidacy for the ICAO Council Part III for the 2026–2028 term to Jakarta-based ambassadors and representatives of ICAO member states.
Through a diplomatic reception, Dudy emphasized Indonesia's strategic decision to strengthen its role and contribution to international civil aviation governance.
He noted that civil aviation connects communities, facilitates trade and tourism, deepens international ties, and serves as a vital engine for social and economic development.
For a country as vast and diverse as Indonesia, he added, aviation holds profound significance.
"As an archipelagic nation of thousands of islands scattered across a wide expanse, a safe, secure, efficient, and sustainable aviation system is vital to connect our people and support our national development," he said.
Indonesia deeply values its partnership with ICAO and its strong ties with all member states.
The country previously held a seat on the ICAO Council for 12 consecutive terms from 1962 to 2001. Now, with the expansion of the ICAO Council from 36 to 40 members, Indonesia has a strong opportunity to regain its seat and resume its global contribution.
According to data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, as of the first half of 2023, Indonesia's aviation sector has served 24.9 million domestic and 18.5 million international passengers across 257 airports, covering 297 domestic and 160 international routes.
These operations are supported by 14 local airlines and 59 foreign airlines.
On safety and security, Indonesia achieved an Effective Implementation (EI) score of 78.85 percent under ICAO's Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme (USOAP), surpassing both the global average of 70.6 percent and the Asia-Pacific average of 69.6 percent.
Meanwhile, in ICAO's Universal Security Audit Programme (USAP), Indonesia achieved a compliance rate of 88.53 percent, above the global target of 75 percent.
