Liverpool handed major injury boost as summer signing makes long-awaited debut against Como

Liverpool rounded off their pre-season with a 2-0 win over Como on Sunday night.

It was the second of two fixtures against the Serie A side, with two separate teams playing in either match.

Andoni Iraola plumped to field what is likely to be his first-choice XI in the second game, which was open to supporters after the first, earlier on Sunday, was played behind closed doors at Anfield.

The highlight of the victory was a debut for Jeremy Jacquet, who finally sported his new colours for the first time after his £60million move from Rennes, which was finalised in January and made official this summer.

The defender suffered a serious shoulder injury last term that curtailed his campaign, and he had been carefully managed by his new club in the lead-up to the Premier League season.

The Frenchman made his bow in front of the Liverpool faithful on Sunday alongside Virgil van Dijk, with the pair expected to be Iraola’s go-to partnership at the heart of defence this year.

The 21-year-old notched the second goal on debut, bundling home from a corner after Cody Gakpo’s opener.

Iraola selected his traditional 4-2-3-1 shape, with Alisson Becker between the sticks. Jeremie Frimpong was at right-back, and Milos Kerkez was on the left.

Alexis Mac Allister, recently returned from the World Cup, played in the first friendly, so Ryan Gravenberch partnered Dominik Szoboszlai in the double pivot, with Florian Wirtz as the No10.

Teenage starlet Rio Ngumoha played off the right flank, with Gakpo to the left of lone striker Alexander Isak.

Loan arrival Ronald Araujo also made his debut from the bench, replacing Jacquet at the interval, while there were minutes for Lewis Koumas on the right flank after he came on for Ngumoha.

Fellow new recruit Victor Munoz was handed a cameo on 73 minutes when he replaced Gakpo off the left, while Trey Nyoni was introduced in place of Wirtz. Isak was sacrificed late on for Will Wright.

The behind closed doors match earlier in the day ended in a goalless draw, with Mac Allister playing 69 minutes before being replaced by Talla Ndiaye, while Harvey Elliott was fielded on the right flank and played 56 minutes.

Federico Chiesa led the line while Munoz started on the left, while Wataru Endo and Kostas Tsimikas both played 90 minutes in the backline, ahead of deputy shot-stopper Giorgi Mamardashvili.
